Education.

Comics are a mighty tool for youth to explore illustration and storytelling. Lee Post teaches participants of all ages a series of easy to follow, progressive lessons to the language of comics to tell a story.

What happens at a Post Marks’ drawing workshop?

The tasks are non-competitive, allowing each youth to find their own success without feeling left behind or held back.  By using short, fast-paced, cumulative lessons, I help participants put skills in to practice quickly and move past any doubts about their artistic talents, building a lifelong love for creating on their own terms.

They will progress from stress-free doodling to a personally meaningful full-page comic story, with each activity and every session of the classes crafted to fit your audience, location and timeframe.

I have curated a library of dozens of activities that have been tested over years. I am always developing new activities and refining the classics.  One of my great joys is working with you to develop a session that fits your participants’ unique needs or a special theme.

What is the target age group?

Over 10 years of teaching cartooning classes, I have collected dozens of activities that are tailored to work with a wide variety of students and ages.  For both school age students and adults, the activities are specifically designed for all skill levels and rely on an enthusiasm for drawing rather than technical skills.

Because I structure each class’s activities individually, I can develop classes that are appropriate for kindergartener’s with no written language skills all the way to  teens and adults. It is also fun to have sessions with kids and their parents where they draw together.

For adults, sessions can be used to build individual and organizational creativity and communication skills. They are also a wonderful session for multi-day conferences to allow participants to relax and build different skills or an activity offered after a meeting, either on-site or elsewhere to wind-down. I have also taught classes in collaboration student teachers and group facilitators to help them learn new and unique skills to engage students and incorporate visual learning into their curriculum.

So unique and something I didn’t expect to experience. I myself would love to be more confident when drawing so that I can help my students. These simple exercises really helped me. Awesome session!!

How long are the workshops?

I have curriculums developed for hour, 90 minute, and two-hour classes on a range of topics that allow my classes to be an excellent one-time comics enrichment activity or as part of a larger conference or art camp.

I also have curriculums for multi-hour sessions where students develop the skills to write a full-comic page.  For example, I have taught several Zoom Summer camps where students met for an hour a day over five days or a four interconnected two-hour sessions where students could pick-and-choose which sessions to attend if they could not make every class.

Are your classes taught in-person?  Over Zoom?

I love to work with participants face-to-face, where they can collaborate as a group and fill the tables with doodles.  I have done sessions in hallways of community centers, school classrooms, over kitchen tables, and as part of large conferences.

Over the last two years, I’ve adapted my curriculum to work excellently over Zoom, where they are just as rewarding and fun for participants as my in-person sessions.  I recently did several multi-day Summer camps all over the State of Alaska over Zoom and the participants and organizers loved them.

What supplies do we need?

We use cheap and easy to find materials found in almost any classroom and home so there are no barriers to the participants continuing to develop their love of art long after the class is over.  The classes are also adaptable to most any space you have available and group size.

In most cases, all the participants will need is paper, ink pens or pencils, and a handful of index cards.  For in-person classes, I bring a box of tricks, filled with worksheets and special props that aid learning.  For several recent zoom art camps, organizers mailed participants small art packs with the minimal supplies and it worked flawlessly.

What does a session or camp cost?

I work with each organization to price their classes based on their need, budgets, and travel expenses.   I primarily charge by the length of the session, preparation time, and any special supplies.

I am also listed on the Alaska Statewide Teaching Artist Roster (STAR) and am eligible to take part in "Artist In Schools" residencies throughout Alaska.

The Alaska State Council on the Arts can help arrange “Artist in Schools” grants for my classes and supplies. Organizations have found them to be very responsive to questions and generous with their assistance.   “Artist in Schools” grants are due biannually on April 15 and November 1st.

Parent feedback from a recent distance learning class:

"Cartoons and Comics with Lee Post was probably the best online class my son has taken, and he has taken a LOT of online courses in the past year including many arts classes. Lee Post did so many things so very well for his students. He created a fun and non-threatening environment for his students to really feel free to experiment within. He provided very clear guidelines and time limits which helped keep kids focused, on task, and moving through the content. The days were very clearly well planned out, moved quickly, and the hour was completely full! I remember one day seeing they had only two minutes left in class when I heard Mr Post instruct kids to begin their one minute cool down activity. He really was filling every minute of instruction with them! His rapport with the students was friendly and comfortable. Kids felt confident sharing their work with the group and I heard so much laughter throughout the week. He did an excellent job with so many elements of online instruction and art instruction. I was very impressed."

Student feedback:

“Thank you Mr. Post for the very cool drawing class. It was really fun. I laughed a lot and the hour went by very fast. I really want to learn how to draw and this got me even more excited.”

Youth Educator feedback:

“The steps were easy and fun. I totally felt capable!”

“Youth-centric! Very clear and fun and engaging. And something for everyone. Appreciate these techniques and tips.”

What are the benefits of a Post Marks’ workshop?

  • Build a visual language to express thoughts and feelings using comics.

  • Develop an understanding of using simple pictures and words sequentially to express complex ideas and build meaning.

  • Foster an appreciation for personal artistic expression and build creativity.

  • Increase group collaboration and communication skills.

  • Increase self-confidence and stress-management skills through an artistic medium that is readily available.

  • Give and receive peer encouragement.

  • Make personal connections.

Why schedule a class with Post Marks?

My classes are based on the experiences I have gained as a self-taught comic artist and freelance illustrator, as well as a 25-year career working with a diverse group of youth and adults with a range of developmental and developmental needs.  I believe strongly that art is something for everyone and should be stress-free and fun.

Apart from working in the arts, I have worked in the social service and youth justice field for 22 years.  I was a trainer in trauma-informed practices and youth resiliency, with the goal of helping youth do better and help staff in work effectively with venerable youth and adults.  It is important to me that my classes provide not just an education in cartooning, but also offer a way for participants to express themselves in a supportive and non-judgemental environment.

What type of classes are available?

Here is a full description of the various classes I have developed over the years. I am also available to develop a custom curriculum to fit your organization’s needs.

When are your next classes?

I am constantly doing classes, private events, and graphic recording. My current calendar is found here. Come draw with me!
