What is Graphic Recording?

“Fish Ladder” to illustrate the various levels of subscriber and donor engagement with a non-profit publication to assist with internal staff training and team building around a common goal.

Graphic recording uses the universal visual language of comics and infographics to create easily understood and easily shared visual summaries of meetings, presentations, oral histories, technical reports, and community feedback.

Graphic recording, also known as visual harvesting, can be done live, where I record information as it happens from a prepared speech during a conference or by working hand-in-hand with a group facilitator to record feedback from small groups during a planning/feedback session.  This can be done practically with paper and markers or digitally where it is projected to the group and/or shared afterward to attendees and online.

Graphic Recording can also be done in my studio.  I collaborate with your organization create refined, yet simple graphics to illustrate complex ideas that can be shared in meetings, online, and/or in written reports.  These images can be done before an event to assist in presenting important information both clearly and with impact or afterwards to memorialize a discussion or present a shared vision.

What are the benefits of Graphic Recording?

  •  Captures information that would otherwise be lost as impactful and memorable illustrations.

  •  Seeing information presented several ways, both visually and orally, increases retention of the important points.

  • Supports the presenter by making the important points of their presentation visible to the group, creating a shared understanding.

  •  The act of Graphic Recording is entertaining and thought-provoking.  Attendees have said it increases their attention and engagement because they are listening to a speaker as well as watching notes being generated in real-time.

  • Allows participants to better remember important themes from presentations as well as allowing people who were unable to attend an engaging set of notes.

  • Provides visual metaphors for abstract ideas and input from a broad range of viewpoints.

  •  Fosters collaboration, allowing participants to craft a shared visual metaphor that is both meaningful for the group and for the individual.

  • Validates the contributions of participants, allowing them to see a summary of their input recorded and visualized.

  • Assists with decision making and change management by visualizing process discussions and feedback for the group in real-time.
